The 2020 update

The 2020 update post thumbnail image

It has been too long since I posted on this site. As a grown-up Geek, sometimes the grown-up has to take priority over the geek, but here is to trying again. It isn’t like my geek-ness hasn’t been getting work. Here is what I have been up to since the last time I posted.

Cut Cable and Got a New TV

Buried in the drafts of this site are my contemplations on “cutting the cord.” After a lot of hemming and hawing, we finally did this in November. This coincided with the launch of Disney+ and their package deal with Hulu and ESPN+. We now use Hulu, Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime for the majority of our viewing. I discovered an app called Locast to help with live sports, but I am sure that will go away eventually and it can be slightly annoying to use, but it is free. The cable bill dropped by almost $200 and we haven’t missed it.

As for the new TV, I wasn’t going to spend a ton, but the new 55″ Vizio looks nice on the mantel. I waited until close to the Super Bowl to buy as many sites say this is the best time to buy, and they are right. The model I wanted dropped over $100 overnight and, other than the need for a new bracket (thanks old tv…), we are set for the next few years.

Actually watched shows when they came out

This doesn’t seem like a big deal, but for someone with 2 kids under the age of 8, finding time to watch my shows is a challenge. I managed to watch all of The Mandalorian and The Witcher when they came out! On a related note, they were both great. While I don’t think The Witcher will be the next Game of Thrones, it is quite good. I haven’t played a single game, but I did read a bunch of the stories. The show is all it is cracked up to be…but don’t watch it with kids around.

The Mandalorian is great. Jon Favreau continues to show why he is the go-to-guy when Disney wanted to start something new (see Iron Man (yes i know it was put out before Disney owned Marvel…but shush), the live action Jungle Book, and now this show).

Bought more games…finished one?

As an owner of the Xbox One, PS4 and a Switch, I have games galore. I have completed exactly one in the last year. That game…Red Dead Redemption 2. Loved it…but by the end, I needed to finish it and just ignored a lot of the side quests. I would like to think I will go back to it, but I doubt it.

The plan for 2020

  • Spend time molding my kids into Star Wars fans, especially ones who can appreciate the fact that Star Wars is still a thing in 2020
  • Watch Picard…after I watch a few episodes to get me ready
  • Play Games
    • Currently working on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, NBA2K20, and the Witcher 3.
    • Into a new campaign using Pathfinder with the gaming crew
    • Run a consistent D&D game
  • Enjoy the Geek Renaissance

Until next time geeks.
