As a grown-up geek, I am rather aware of all of the amazing things technology has done for me in my life. I can search YouTube for the perfect video clip at the perfect time, find GIF files instantly and save a multitude of TV shows for when I get a chance to watch them.
This amazing advance in recording technology has changed the way most everyone watches TV in 2017. I remember always having to be home in front of the TV when I wanted to watch a show when I was younger until my father bought a VCR (think it cost over $200 from the local video store…). Once I learned how to program the times correctly, I could tape (yes I said tape) show and watch it when I could. The game then became leaving some extra time after each show so you could record another…and you better hope the tape had space.
The DVR changed all of that. Suddenly you could record many shows (up to 5 now) and still watch other things. I could not tell you what time some of my favorite shows are broadcast live, which is both good and bad.
The bad comes from the backup. I don’t know about you, but as someone who works full time, has 2 kids, a wife, and life commitments, TV takes a back seat. Thanks to the DVR, I can record all of the shows I want to see and catch-up later. Well, later is here and I am feeling a bit overwhelmed.
My current DVR list is as follows**
- Arrow (15)
- Flash (12)
- Star Wars REBELS (8)
- Justice League Action (11)
- NCIS (6)
- Power Rangers Ninja Steel (6)
- The Big Bang Theory (3)
I am bad at math, but that is many hours of TV to watch. This does not include the fact that I haven’t finished Iron Fist (which more than one fellow geek has told me is ok), need to catch up on Ash v. Evil Dead, start American Gods, start Stranger Things and get ready for Game of Thrones. Not to mention Doctor Who (2 seasons behind) Supergirl (all seasons behind), Legends of Tomorrow (I watched some of it), Into the Badlands (someday) and Sherlock (no idea where I left off).
To be honest, I am plain intimidated by the amount of Flash and Arrow I have to catch up on. I have tried to stay away from spoilers, but it has been tough. I have a pretty good idea of what happens on each, but I would like to see it for myself. On the flip side, the Justice League Action and Star Wars REBELS are things I can watch when the kids are around. Power Rangers is for my son (honest..why are you laughing? This is a safe space for geeks of all kinds) and NCIS and Big Bang Theory are shows my wife and I like to watch together. At least the summer means fewer commitments and, perhaps, more time to watch.
Did I mention I have video games and books to catch up on as well?
