For those that follow Arbitrary Noise, this next post may seem like a 180. Sports on a geek site? Well, why not, I ask. The site has the word “arbitrary” in it, right?
Anyway, when Greg and I starting kicking around ideas, I had this one that popped up when it came to the idea of sports: Does it truly matter if a great athlete goes his/her whole career without winning it all?
We’ve all heard it before. “Yeah, he’s great but where is the ring?” I have two words for you: Ted Williams. He was the best player in his generation, but never won it all. Does it tarnish his legacy, no f*#king way, and this is coming from a Yankee Fan.
Let’s not stop there. Patrick Ewing, Dan Marino, Chris Carter, Karl Malone, Barry Sanders, etc, etc etc…..
I think it’s unfortunate that our society seems to ultimately judge an athlete’s legacy on the number of championships.
